Sofia is small enough to walk and old enough to reward it: Roman streets in the underpasses, four faiths within one square, and a mountain at the end of the boulevard. These 15 cover the city and the day trips that leave from it, with prices and running times.

Explore Sofia’s Museum of Illusions for clever photo tricks, family fun, helpful staff, and an easy one-hour break indoors.
“Nice trip to the Illusion museum. Good way to escape the summer sun for 1 hour or so. First time there, and staff were friendly and approachable. We went in the afternoon, and though it was busy, we didn’t have any problems with experiencing some of the exhibits. I don’t think you can spend more than 1 hour here, as there’s not quite enough to keep you entertained and engaged.”

See Sofia’s cathedral, Roman ruins, mineral springs, and key landmarks on a friendly 2-hour walking tour with a local guide.
“This tour was a fantastic way to discover Sofia’s most important landmarks. What made it really special was our guide, Nikola — knowledgeable, friendly, and someone who made me feel completely at ease from the start. He shared fascinating insights into Bulgaria’s history and took the time to answer all my questions thoroughly. It felt more like exploring the city with a local friend than a typical tour. Highly recommended!”

Hike Bulgaria’s Seven Rila Lakes and visit Rila Monastery on a self-guided day trip from Sofia, with shared transport and practical route tips.
“I had such a great experience with the Rila Lakes + Monastery trip! Our driver was great and made the ride smooth and comfortable (you book spots for the day and then you are with a group of other travelers on a bus). Prior to departing, Phillip gave us tips on the best routes to take for the hike, which made all the difference. His advice helped me enjoy the lakes at my own pace while still catching the highlights. The hike itself was self-guided, but having those pointers made it feel stress-free. He also regularly checked in with the group via WhatsApp to keep us on schedule and give…”

Review of Sofia’s Lovech, Devetaki Cave and Krushuna Waterfalls tour, with practical advice on sights, transport, value, and walking.
“Good to be picked up from hotel. Comfortable minibus, group size 5 adults. Circular walk to waterfall. Scenic, but could get very crowded. Quite a lot of walking and many slippery steps throughout the whole trip. We visited several caves all with different features. Zero accessibility if you have a mobility impairment. A full day trip. Bring plenty of water. On our trip being driven at 150km/hr on several occasions was interesting, as was the driver not using windscreen wipers for a while.”
Every kind of day out, and the best of each.
